Craven County, NC

Insight was engaged to update Craven County’s CAMA Land Use Plan, first adopted in 2009. The 2025 update aims to comply with CAMA requirements and establish policies to guide the county’s growth and development. Craven County’s unique geography drives contrasting needs: rising population and development in the eastern region, alongside agricultural communities in the west. The county is also home to Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, adding further considerations.

The plan’s central vision focuses on balancing citizens’ interests while preserving the county’s character and identifying areas for growth. Balancing agriculture with urbanization was a complex yet rewarding task, achieved through extensive community engagement to incorporate diverse perspectives.

Once complete, the plan will include a future land use map reflecting public input and growth opportunities, as well as goals, objectives, and policies addressing housing demand, agricultural preservation, and land use management. It will also provide a comprehensive analysis of the county’s history, demographics, agriculture, environment, facilities, transportation, and land use.
